The City School District of Albany is proud to recognize Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month throughout May, an opportunity to celebrate the history, contributions and cultures of Asian-Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders.

This month-long observance offers a time to reflect on the achievements and struggles of these communities, and to promote understanding and inclusion.

Congress first designated May as a month-long observance of AAPI heritage in 1992. They selected May because it is the month that the first Japanese immigrants came to American (1843), and the month that marked completion of the transcontinental railroad (1869), constructed with significant contributions from Chinese immigrants.

The month-long observance provides an opportunity to learn more about the vast and varied contributions that communities with roots through the Asia-Pacific region have made to the advancement of the United States, as well as the challenges and obstacles these individuals have faced, and continue to face.

The Federal Asian Pacific American Council has designated the theme of this year’s observance as “A Legacy of Leadership and Resillience.” You can .
