Falcons meet change-makers at civics fair

Group of students speaking to a community leader

On Thursday, our students had an incredible opportunity to engage with community leaders who are working to make positive changes here in Albany and beyond!

During our civics fair, seniors had the chance to dialogue about important topics, such as literacy, mental health, animal protection, education, civil rights, transportation, voting, violence prevention, agroecology and more! Through this experience, our Falcons forged valuable connections with community organizations that can support them as they develop their senior capstone projects for civics class.

We want to give a huge shout-out to the community organizers and organizations that participated in our civics fair:

  • Albany NAACP
  • Afghan Community Center
  • Alliance for Quality Education
  • Capital Streets
  • Foundation for Suicide Prevention
  • International Center of the Capital Region
  • League of Women Voters
  • Mohawk Hudson Humane Society
  • Noteworthy Resources
  • Party for Socialism and Liberation
  • People's Perception Project (P3)
  • Skin Deep Naturals
  • Soul Fire Farm
  • Underground Railroad Education Center
  • We Are Revolutionary
  • YouthFX
  • YWCA

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to each organization who partnered with us for this event and to Sierra Sangetti-Daniels and the team at P3 for their support in this initiative!

Additionally, a special thanks to our social studies teachers Peter Anderson, Jessie LaPolla, James Morrill, Barbara Riordan, Graham Wall, David Weiss and Amanda Weklar for their guidance in the classroom each day.

We're confident that the conversations and interactions our students had at our civics fair will catalyze steps towards meaningful change in the future!
